Republic and Separatist forces clash across a thousand worlds. After their initial losses, the Republic forces regroup and achieve success on several fronts. It appears the Republic has the upper hand, even though their Clone Troopers are outnumbered by the Separatist’s droid forces. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is deeply concerned, fearful that the war will rip the Republic apart unless the Separatists are stopped.
Word spreads through the Republic of the devastation wrought by the Separatist forces when they attack Republic worlds. Cities are laid to ruin, and lives are destroyed. Count Dooku is portrayed as a mad despot, one that will slaughter all who oppose his vision of the galaxy.
In an effort to match the numbers of the droid armies of the Separatists, the Republic commissions additional armies to be created on Kamino. This draws sharp criticism from the Anti-War Movement, led by Senators Organa of Alderaan and Amidala of Naboo. Support for the war is in the majority in the Senate, but the peace movement is gaining considerable ground.
One year into the conflict, the Republic and the Jedi Order are shocked when Qui-Gon Jinn announces that he is supporting the Separatist Cause, and that Dooku has been poorly portrayed. Qui-Gon explains that Dooku’s supporters acted on their own initiatives when it came to pacifying hostile worlds, and that those actions would not be tolerated any longer. Several Separatist leaders are removed from their positions, including the Separatist Droid General, Grievous. Qui-Gon also states that there is corruption within the Republic Leadership, extending to the Senate and even the Chancellor’s office. He says that if Jedi Generals will lead troops of indentured slaves against the droids, then an Exiled Jedi shall lead the forces against them.
The Republic Holonews reports that this betrayal by the former Jedi Master is just another tactic of deception by the vicious Dooku, and that the removal of the Separatist Commanders are nothing but a feint. Several Jedi question the war more openly now, and rumors are scores of Jedi leave the order to join Qui-Gon with the Separatists.
Due to the number of losses the Jedi Order has suffered, from deaths in the field to the exodus of Jedi to the Separatist cause, Anakin Skywalker is made a Jedi Knight.
A Cloning Facility on Kamino are destroyed, causing great catastrophe for the growing Republic Army. An estimated three hundred thousand clone troopers and hundreds of their Kaminoan caretakers are killed when the city slips into the vast Kamino ocean. The Separatists are blamed for this horrific act.
In retaliation, Republic Forces led by Obi-Wan Kenobi are able to destroy the Separatist’s newest and largest battlecruiser, the Malevolence. The titanic ship had been a grave threat to the Republic space forces with it’s ability to disable entire fleets with a massive Ion cannon, and then systematically destroy them with it’s bristling array of turbo-lasers. Reports are Kenobi and Skywalker boarded to Malevolence and locked it’s navigational controls on a nearby star.
